Grand Hikers at Superstition Mountains Wilderness Area - November 2024

Over 85 Grand Hikers enjoyed a recent Fall Season Out of Area hiking trip to Gold Canyon, Arizona, November 18-21. This event was planned and led by Jeanine Calabrese and as all Grand Hikers’ Out of Area hikes, this one was very successful. This trip included the difficulty of a second pre-hike trip due to the recent Siphon fire in the area. In addition to hikes, we all enjoyed an optional group dinner at the Gold Canyon Golf Course.
Jeanine noted that she had a huge amount of help from experienced Grand Hikers' members and leaders. Thanks to the following for their support in helping make this event a success!
Hike leaders: Cindy Anderson, Nancy Ash, Sid Bildfell, Paul Careau, Leslie Paul and Marilyn Torrence
Support team: Dot Agather, Brenda Cooper, Tina MacPhail, Mary Patterson, Marge Rider and Jodee Tomassoni
Each day offered an easy, moderate or difficult hike to choose from providing a wide variety of experiences in and around the mountain area. Hikes included: not so steep or steeper trails; hieroglyphics and petroglyphs; crossing multiple creek beds; abundant views for miles (and more miles); some bouldering; visiting historical sites; and in one case, you could surf a rock wave on the Wave Cave trail!
The Superstition Mountains are named after the indigenous people of the area, the Akimel O’odham who told stories of the mountains being a source of fear, mysterious deaths and strange sounds. The area is a very popular recreational destination for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Two highest points are Superstition Mountain (5,059’) and Weavers needle (4,555’). Our next out of town trip is scheduled during February 24-27, 2025, in Palm Springs, California. Check our Trail Buzz on the website Home Page under the Newsletter section for all the details. You will want to reserve your room soon!
